Old media seemed to learn NOTHING from the record companies (which also fought tooth and nail against new ways of delivering music) as they attempt to deny cable operators new alternatives to let their subscribers access the content they’re already paying for. I can’t help but think that Viacom and Discovery and all of the other content providers would do well to assist in the innovation and perhaps lure iPad and iPhone users (e.g. YOUNG PEOPLE!) who want to watch that way back into the fold.

I believe in eugenics and find that having children is not a right but a privilege, or at least it should be. I have seen way to many people who are not suitable for having children get one child after another. So let me answer your comments. >(1) Do we want to set a precedent whereby the state controls our reproductive lives. That is, within our social contract, is this acceptable state power. Yes, it is. Like any other important part I want to studies to be made and regulations to set in place. >(2) There's no good way to decide who gets sterilized. It's presumptuous of certain groups of society to deem other groups unworthy of breeding. Yes, there is. 1. Genetic diseases. Eliminating dangerous, painful and crippling genetic diseases should be a priority. We are dooming our children to suffer pains that are so easy to avoid if we do not. 2. By the one the thing that set us apart from animals. Our intelligence. After selecting for diseases intelligence should be the priority. People talk about the computer singularity where computers can improve themselves. We humans can do the same with a much simpler method: selective breeding. >(3) Everywhere it's been implemented to date it's disproportionately targeted ethnic and sexual minorities. That is, the decision of who is allowed to breed is in part predicated on the social values of the day. Assuming it'll be different now is likely naive. We haven't eliminated bias and prejudice, we never will, and they'll be reflected in value judgments on who shouldn't breed. That is factually wrong. But aside from that its also ignorant to assume that it will be the same no matter the differences in the situation. The cases you have refereed to already had racism generally saturated in the society. If eugenics where attempted where such cultural biases did not exist things may go differently. >(4) Artificially eliminating diversity from a population is undesirable. Genetic bottlenecks ask for extirpation. Have you never wondered how small tribes/societies kept their genetic diversity before mass transportation was invented? If I remember correctly a study done by NASA that attempted to find how many people the absolute minimum needed to keep the genetic diversity in a generation ship was something like 70. As such even if we limited genetic harvesting to about 1% of the population it would still be in the number of hundreds of millions worldwide. >(5) The current trend of eugenics is in utero, called the parental rights movement; should parents have the right to choose genetic markers for their children. In other words, should parents have the right to abort any fetus because it's "gay," or has some other quality deemed by our current social mores to be undesirable. Why should they not? Racist people are not going to have a black partner. So it would be no different from natural selection and good genes benefits everyone. The direct measure is the fact that those gene will eventually spread as children's children marry other people. The other effect is competent people benefit everyone. The more genius people there are the progress there are. Its a win win situation for everyone.

Great Idea!

"Idiom Definitions for 'Poacher turned gamekeeper'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone who gets a legitimate job which is the opposite of their previous one. E.G a computer hacker who then helps to catch other hackers or an ex-bank robber who then advises banks on security."

Edit: "Neil", are you really that surprised with "Spell Check"?
